In contrast to the conventional wisdom of the political economy of modern Egypt, this study contends that the Egyptian capitalist class is not a ÔparasiticÕ class that is interested only in investing in commercial and financial activities and challenges the view that the Egyptian state is merely a tool in the hands of the ÔparasiticÕ bourgeoisie.
